Nanos

NanosNanos is a 12 km long and up to 6 km wide karst plateau about 50 km southwest from the Slovenian capital city Ljubljana. Nanos and Snežnik are the most representative mountains in the Notranjska area. Nanos mountain is also close to the famous Postojna cave which is the longest cave system in the country as well as one of its top tourist sites. Transmitting site is located on the sharp cut edge of Nanos called Pleša.

First broadcasts from Nanos started in 1955. In 1960 a decision was made to build a complete transmitting site with all the infrastructure including a 50 m high tower.  The site was completed at the end of 1962. At that time two radio stations and one television channel were broadcasted.

Transmitting site Nanos played also an important role in adopting PAL color television system in Italy. In 1970 there were first trial broadcasts from the Nanos site with color television (on channel 27) which were later replaced with regular broadcasts of TV Koper. Since at that time there were no color TV broadcasts in Italy and they haven't yet decided on color TV system (either PAL or SECAM), a lot of people started to watch color TV on PAL receivers. This later resulted in adoption of PAL system and  expansion of private televisions in Italy. Analog broadcasting of TV Koper/Capodistria was switched off at 22:00 on 22 November 2010 to start broadcasting of Multiplex A on channel 27.
